You do not always need a court to improve.
Some of the best beginner pickleball drills can be done at home with just a paddle, a ball, a wall, and a small amount of space.
The goal is not to hit harder. The goal is to build better control, softer hands, faster reactions, and more confidence with the paddle.
Here are 10 simple at-home pickleball drills to try.
1. Paddle Taps (Forehand and Backhand)
Hold your paddle flat and gently bounce the ball on the forehand side.
Flip to the backhand side and keep the ball bouncing without dropping it.
Try to keep a steady rhythm.
This helps improve hand eye coordination, paddle control, and touch.
2. Edge Control Challenge
Turn your paddle sideways and try to bounce the ball on the thin edge of the paddle.
Start slow and see how many touches you can get in a row.
This drill improves precision, focus, and soft control.
3. Wall Rally
Stand a few metres from a wall and rally the ball back and forth.
Try to keep the ball moving continuously without chasing it around.
Start with gentle hits and build consistency before adding speed.
This helps improve timing, control, and rally confidence.
4. Around the Body Ball Pass
Without using the floor, move the ball around your body using only your paddle.
Go around your waist, legs, or switch between forehand and backhand sides.
Try to keep the ball under control without dropping it.
This improves touch, coordination, and paddle confidence.
5. Serve Target Challenge
Place a towel, cone, or marker on the ground and practise serving towards it.
Focus on control and consistency instead of power.
Challenge yourself to hit the target area multiple times in a row.
This helps improve serve accuracy and confidence during games.
Why At-Home Drills Matter
Pickleball rewards control.
The kitchen area is a major part of the game because players cannot volley from inside it. That means soft shots, touch, placement, and patience matter.
A good at-home drill should be simple, short, and repeatable.
Even five minutes a day can help you build better habits.
